On Track Plant (OTP)
Course Description
Provides the skills and underpinning knowledge required to undertake Machine Controller (MC) and/or Crane Controller (CC) duties including, how the machine/attachment is designed to function under normal operating conditions, what equipment calibration certificates and checks are required to comply with the relevant rules and regulations, how to avoid the machine/attachment being placed in an unsafe or unstable condition, how to correctly attach and use the attachment and control the movement of the host machine/crane taking into account the condition of the track, cant, gradient and exclusion zones and what information needs to be given to the driver, operator.
Who Is the ON Track Plant (OTP) Course Suitable For?
These OTP courses enable delegates to perform the duties and gain Machine Controller (MC) and Crane Controller (CC) Competence.
The aim if these OTP courses is to train individuals who are responsible for undertaking the roles of Machine Controller (MC) and/or Crane Controller (CC) as part of their duties on Network Rail infrastructure and to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in both Machine Controller (MC) and Crane Controller (CC) and the use of MC/CC Attachments (Att).
Based upon the organisation requirements delegates will be able to either act Machine Controller (MC) or Crane Controller (CC) or undertake both roles.

Course: Control of Any Line Open (ALO) – OTP04
Control of Any Line Open (ALO) – OTP04 “course are now available at Shannon Rail Services” – Those currently involved in the planning and co-ordination of ALO have until 10th February 2025 to gain this new competence
There is no mandated action learning following this course. It is required that delegates have PTS – Personal Track Safety – (OTP Core eLearning is advisable but not mandated) as a prerequisite before attending this course.
The aim of the course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to plan and coordinate Any Line Open activities on Network Rail infrastructure.
The Control of Any Line Open (OTP04) course is a one day course designed and written by Network Rail. Shannon Rail Services offers an additional one day course, ALO Appreciation, together with the OTP04 course to provide a further appreciation of ALO Planning and Co-ordination.
(OTP 04) Control of Any Line Open became live on sentinel as of 1 June 2023 only Training Providers approved by Network Rail and National Skills Academy Rail (NSAR) can deliver Control Of Any Line Open (OTP 04-ALO), this includes bespoke ALO Planner and/or Coordinator or both, the competence is now awarded on Sentinel as (0TP 04) Control Of Ant Line Open, valid for 4 Years, upon successful completion and passing the course.
Those involved in the planning and co-ordination of ALO holding any bespoke card or certificate issued prior to 1 June 2023 have until 10th February 2025 to gain the new Control Of Any Line Open (OTP 04-ALO) competence, otherwise they will be deemed as not having the appropriate competence for the work being undertaken.
Any bespoke ALO Planner and/or Coordinator card or certificate issued after 1 June 2023 by any Training Provider or Sponsor, NOT issued by an Approved Network Rail/NSAR Training Provider and competence awarded on Sentinel is NOT VALID.
In particular any bespoke card or certificate with an issue date after 1 June 2023 and expiry date after 25 February 2025 is invalid and should reported to NSAR and or Network Rail and not be produced on-site.
