Who Is The Course Suitable For?

This course enables delegates to perform Any Line Open (ALO) planning and
co-ordinating activities and gain the ALO Controller Competence.

This course is to train individuals who are responsible for undertaking roles within the Control of Any Line Open Working as part of their duties on Network Rail infrastructure and to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in both ALO Planning and ALO Co-ordination.

It is strongly recommended that candidates nominated to attend the training have a good working knowledge of OTP /OTM operations.

Based upon their organisation requirements delegates will be able to either plan, co-ordinate, or undertake both roles.

Course Description

Network Rail have produced a new Sentinel competence and training course – OTP04 Control of Any Line Open. A new competence with a standardization of training was requested by the rail industry and therefore a new competency has been produced by an industry working group using the guidance in M&EE COP0032.

This training course is now live and is aimed at anyone who does the planning and/or co-ordination for OTP ALO activities. It is strongly recommended that candidates nominated to attend the training have a good working knowledge of OTP /OTM operations.

There is a single competence being awarded for this course which provides two capabilities (OTP04). There are NOT two competences. Those who attain this competence may do work for both ALO Planning and Co-ordinating, or just focus on one role after attaining this competence covering both. This is a one-day face-to-face course with knowledge and practical assessments, successful delegates will leave this course as level 3 competent, Valid on sentinel for 4 years.

Delegates are required to undertake some self-motivated and directed pre-learning, prior to attending the course.

Course Aims

The aim of the course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to plan and co-ordinate Any Line Open activities on Network Rail infrastructure.

Course Objectives

At the end of the training the delegate will be able to:

  • Relate the requirements of legislation, RSSB rule book and Network Rail standards applicable to the role of ALO Planning and Co-ordination
  • Support individuals to work withing the Network Rail Lifesaving Rules and displaying Network Rail behaviours
  • Select and access the appropriate sources of information to effectively plan ALO activities
  • Plan a safe ALO activity
  • Discuss the process for ALO plan authorisation describing the roles within the authorisation process
  • Implement an authorised ALO plan
  • The process the modify the ALO plan to take into account changes o site
  • The process to re-plan a safe ALO activity working within the change control process

The Control of Any Line Open (OTP04) course is a two day course designed and written by Network Rail.

Shannon Rail Sercices offers an additional one day course, ALO Appreciation, which can be undertaken to provide a further understanding and awareness of the requirements of ALO Working.
